Instruments in the Attic Travels to Jamaica

Categories

MCAA guitar teacher, Glen McCarthy was generous enough to include Instruments in the Attic (IiA) on his vacation to Sandals, Jamaica over winter break. Before his trip, Mr. McCarthy came to Instruments in the Attic Coordinator, Samantha Clarke, seeking a trumpet to bring with him. He explained that the Sandals Foundation was in need of a trumpet, and that he would love to bring it there on behalf of Instruments in the Attic.

This is not the first time that Mr. McCarthy donated an instrument on IiA’s behalf. Not only has he brought other instruments to the Sandals Foundation as a part of his travels, but Mr. McCarthy regularly facilitates donations to school music programs throughout the Northern Virginia area. Mr. McCarthy is always generously lending his time to IiA by assessing and repairing guitars and helping to match instruments with students and teachers in need. Mr. McCarthy is such an asset to Instruments in the Attic, The Academy, and our greater community, and we are so fortunate to have him here at MCAA!

Piano Available to Good Home

Categories

A generous family from Stafford, VA recently contacted the Academy about gifting their Kimball upright piano to a good home. If anyone is interested in accepting this gift, please contact us ASAP.

The piano is approximately 38 years old and is free of charge (to a good home); however, the family requests the recipient to pay for the moving expense, which averages around $250-300 (when using a professional piano moving company) depending on the distance traveled, number of stairs involved, etc. Also, acoustic pianos usually require a tuning from a professional piano tuner after a move as well.

If you think you have a need (and a space) for this piano, it’s a great opportunity to look into. We will handle this on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please email us at academy@gmu.edu  (no phone calls please) and put “Piano Available to Good Home” in the subject (or simply Reply to the Newsletter email). A recipient will be matched as soon as possible.

Please note that these opportunities typically come up several times throughout the year, so keep checking the Academy Newsletter!

Thursday, February 2, 2023, 7:30pm

Pre-Concert Lecture 6:30-7:00pm in the theatre by scholar Rebecca Harris-Warrick

This program is dedicated to the music of Pergolesi, whose enormous popularity during the era of Madame de Pompadour inspired the Guerre des Bouffons, an intellectual and artistic battle between partisans of Italian and French music. The performance will feature a semi-staged program of the Italian composer’s extraordinarily popular comedy La Servante maîtresse and a concert rendition of his beloved Stabat Mater, conducted by Patrick Dupré Quigley.

Opera Lafayette has graciously offered a 55% discount to MCAA students and their families with code Pergolesi23.

Faculty Enrichment Fund Awardee, Hannah Price

Categories

The Academy values the importance of our teacher’s professional development. Because of this, the Faculty Enrichment Fund annually provides partial and full reimbursement for teachers to attend conferences, workshops, and teacher training sessions.

Our violin teaching artist, Hannah Price, recently partook in Suzuki Method training. The online training included 8 hours of instruction over two days, providing foundational education on the Suzuki method – its philosophy, big-picture approach, and the educational approaches that make it effective:

“I’m a Suzuki kid – I grew up on the method and was immersed in it from the age of 2 until about 14. Now that I’m a professional musician and a teacher, it was curiosity and a drive for teaching excellence that compelled me to take the first step in Suzuki training. I wanted to learn more about my own training and be able to provide the same foundation of learning for my students.

I can say with confidence that my inaugural Suzuki training provided me that, and more. It was both informative and affirming for me as a teacher, and also provided me the perspective I was looking for. I explored, in depth, the “every child can” philosophy and unpacked what it means to me: every child has the ability to learn music, and there’s a lot of other support that must come from the child’s environment and from their parents that makes that exponential learning possible. I rediscovered my teaching philosophy, redefined my educational goals, and found clarity on how I can cultivate a studio of students who are hardworking, kind, dedicated and creative individuals. And I owe a lot of thanks to the Academy’s faculty enrichment fund for making that possible for me.”
