Email Issues With Verizon, Yahoo and AOL

Categories

It has come to our attention that we have recently been experiencing intermittent email delivery issues with verizon.net, yahoo.com and aol.com email account holders. For our program participants/ parents, if you would like to provide an alternative email account to ensure program communication delivery, please let us know!

The cause of the issue is not known at this time, but we believe it is a larger problem beyond the Academy. We welcome any insights (we know we have a lot of IT-minded constituents!), and we will let everyone know if/ when the issue is resolved.

To provide a new and/or alternative email address, either call the Academy office at 703-993-9889 or send an email to potomac@gmu.edu . Isn’t technology grand?

String Quartet Performs Video Game Music

Categories

Triforce Quartet, a traditional string quartet that plays video game music from across the ages (from Mario and Zelda to Overwatch, Final Fantasy, and everything in between!), will present a riveting performance and discussion at this year’s Ovations Summer Strings Academy.

The Ovations Summer Strings Academy is a summer string orchestra and chamber music program that brings around 80 high school and middle school students to the Mason campus each year. Along with daily rehearsals and two final performances, the students participate in master classes and guest artist presentations. During this year’s program (June 25-30, 2017), the Triforce Quartet will join the students on Thursday afternoon.

Triforce Quartet performs regularly for audiences across the U.S. and internationally, and has played in front of sold out shows at PAX Prime in Seattle, PAX East in Boston; MAGFest in Washington DC, the iDIG Music Festival in Ireland and with Video Games Live! Members include Christopher Ferrara (1st Violin), Jacob Roege (2nd Violin), Stanley Beckwith (Viola) and Chad Schwartz (Cello). They released their second studio album, Ultima Phantasia, in 2016.

The Quartet will be joined by Brandon Harris, a graduate of George Mason University in Double Bass Performance, who also received his Masters degree from the Peabody Institute and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree at Catholic University. “Brandon will be presenting a very informative lecture/discussion with the  quartet about the history of video game music,” said Ovations Co-Director and Mason Professor Glenn Dewey. “This lecture was recently presented at the Peabody Bass Works camp and was a highlight of the entire event!”

Are you a High School or Middle School string player and want to get in on the action? There is still a chance to register for the Ovations program – don’t delay, or it’s “GAME OVER”!

Spring 2017 Competition Recitals, June 11

Categories

The finalists in our Spring 2017 Music Competition will present recitals this Sunday, June 11th at Harris Theatre on the Mason Fairfax campus. The event is free and open to the public – join us for an exemplary afternoon of music performed by students of all ages and instruments!

WHEN: Sunday, June 11, 2017 at 12 noon and 2 PM
WHERE: Harris Theatre at Mason in Fairfax  See Map
COST: FREE and open to the public
PARKING: Free parking in Lot K, or $8 in Mason Pond Parking Deck

Our first annual Music Competition, which called for audition video submissions in March/ April, was open to all instruments and ages, from both the Academy and the outside community. The submitted audition videos were then judged by a panel of Mason Music faculty members and area professional artists, who provided valuable feedback to the students.

After over 70 entries, the panel selected about 40 finalists from the 4 Categories (Elementary, Middle School, High School, and Adult Amateur) to perform in the Final Recitals, based on a standard scoring system.

While providing important musicianship critiques for the students and a performance opportunity in a professional theater, the event doubled as a fundraiser for the Academy. The Competition entry fee proceeds will be earmarked for the Academy’s scholarship and community outreach programs.

Thanks to everyone who participated – we hope to see you at the Recitals!
