James Nickel

Teaching Artist - French Horn

Biography:

James Nickel has been a member of the National Symphony Orchestra since 2009. Under the direction of Christoph Eschenbach, he has served as both Acting Associate Principal and third horn. While a member of the NSO, Mr. Nickel has toured Europe, Asia, South America and domestically including performances at the White House. Before coming to Washington, D.C., he was the Assistant Principal horn with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Litton and Associate Principal horn with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Charles Dutoit. He has also performed with the orchestras of Detroit, Houston, and as Principal horn with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

In the summertime, Mr. Nickel has performed at the Garth Newel Music Center, the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival in South Africa, and Music in the Mountains in Colorado. In addition to his orchestral duties, Mr. Nickel is on faculty at both George Mason University and Catholic University.

Mr. Nickel is a native of Saint Petersburg, FL, and he completed his B.M. at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston.
