Music Mini Sessions
Ages 8 – 18

 

OVERVIEW

Expand your musicianship via one of the following 6-week mini courses. Ranging from introductory to intermediate levels, these music classes equip students with the fundamentals of music theory and history. Students can participate in one or more sessions. For students who wish to advance their musicianship to a higher level, visit the Vivace! Music Intensive Program.

 

 


 

Music Theory and Ear Training I

Prerequisite: Intro to Music Theory and Ear Training OR placement test (written and aural identification of major and minor intervals, chords, and scales. Identification of key signatures.)

This class builds upon basic theory concepts to expand students’ knowledge, understanding, and recognition of musical building blocks. Topics include chord progressions, scale degrees, seventh chords, inversions, texture, and harmonic relationships. In addition to written and practical (ear-training) exercises, students are exposed to the basic tools and concepts of harmonic and formal analysis. The final project consists of analyzing a piece of music the student has recently learned in their private lessons.

Fun with Rhythms  – New Section Added!

Prerequisite: Good grasp of basic rhythms, sixteenth notes, dotted notes, triplets.

This practical course explores advanced rhythmic concepts through individual and class clapping exercises, as well as performance on boomwhackers. Students will enjoy learning about syncopation, hemiola, and additive rhythms in a lively group setting.

If It’s Not Baroque…

This music history class dives into the Baroque period of Western Classical music (1600-1750). Students will learn about the Baroque style, its origins and development; study the music of Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Vivaldi and discover the story behind the music!

Intro to Music Theory

This course is designed to broaden and develop core musical concepts and skills with written and practical (ear-training) exercises in a fun and interactive group setting. The class will give students a solid theoretical foundation, which will greatly improve their ability to learn music on their instrument, sight-read, and memorize. Topics include chords, rhythms, scales, intervals, and key signatures.
