ADULT VOICE CLASS: REPERTOIRE FOCUS ONLINE
Adults 18+
OVERVIEW
Students in this class will pre-select 3 or 4 songs they are interested in learning over the course of the session. Whether popular or classical repertoire, this will allow you to take a classical learning approach to learning these songs. Basic music reading tools will be incorporated for those who are new to reading music or want to improve their reading skills. Weekly topics will include how to tackle certain elements of a song poetically, rhythmically, melodically, and dynamically. Participants will have the option of singing their prepared pieces in a masterclass-like setting throughout the session. On the final day students will have the opportunity to perform for each other as well as any invited guests they choose. Note: Students must select and purchase their own music for this course.

Ashlyn Rock
Vocal Coach
Read about Ms. Rock
Before Ms. Rock came to Mason, she had not taken voice lessons or was familiar with the classical world of music and vocal studies. She started at Mason as an English major for her love of poetry and prose, but hoped to pursue a duel degree with Music after being inspired from singing in choir all four years of high school. It was not until her sophomore year at Mason did the School of Music fully accept her as a Bachelor in Music in Vocal Performance. Her growth since studying voice has been exponential.
During her first years at Mason, Ashlyn has had the opportunity to study opera and classical voice in the Washington, D.C. area and abroad. She studied bel canto singing and performed Italian opera at the La Musica Lirica program in Novafeltria, Italy with Dr. Kathryn Hearden in the summer of 2017. Here she traveled to San Marino and local towns including Rimini, Sant’Agata, and Sant’Arcangelo to perform in Puccini’s La Boheme and Suor Angelica. Ms. Rock recently went on a study abroad tour to Reykjavik, Iceland with Mason’s University Singers to perform at the Hallgrímskirkja and the Grafarvogskirkja Church.
Ms. Rock has participated in Master Classes with Metropolitan and internationally renowned Opera singers Danielle Talamantes, Ann Murray, Elizabeth Bishop, and most recently, Charlotte Hellekant. She has placed Honors and third place in her categories at the National Association of Teachers of Singing State Competitions (NATS) and she recently placed third in the 2019 Sue Goetz Ross Friday Morning Music Club Competition. In previous productions of Mason Opera, Ms. Rock played the role of Celia in Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe, The Dew Fairy in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, as well as in Opera Scenes and in G.C. Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. In her last year at George Mason she played the role of Emmie in Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring and the title role in Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.
