JumpstART Online: Portfolio Prep

Summer 2020 registration is open!

This class will allow high school students to further develop their skills and conceptual development towards a completed art portfolio for college submission. Dr. Justin Sutters is the Director of the Art Education program at Mason and has extensive experience working with high school students, both as a teacher and one who prepares teachers. Students will be guided through numerous artistic processes such as printmaking, calligraphy, altered books, and handmade books. We will coordinate a materials kit through Plaza Art that can either be picked up curbside or delivered. Students can purchase additional materials but also use what they already have. We will make use of a lot of found objects as well. Students will conduct research on artists online and participate in daily sketchbook activities and written reflection.

Students will also have the opportunity to engage in critiques with the other students as well as receive individual feedback from Dr. Sutters. The class will also involve guest speakers from Mason that will provide more information about the college application process as well as feedback on their artwork. While the completely online format will provide some challenges, it also will provide students a lot of freedom and continue to cultivate an artistic practice on their own, which is excellent experience in preparing for art school.

Limited partial scholarships are available for this program!  To apply, please email academy@gmu.edu and request application form.
