Saturday School for the Arts
at Hunters Woods Elementary

In 2009, the Mason Community Arts Academy (formerly Potomac Arts Academy) entered into a collaboration initiative with Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences in Reston, VA and Southgate Community Center to launch a pilot Arts Education program – “Hunters Woods Saturday School for the Arts”. The purpose of the program was to target selected students in the Hunters Woods community who were traditionally under served in the arts, and to provide them with supplemental arts education and enrichment. Several years later, the program continues to transform young minds.

The talents and expertise of Mason faculty and students are utilized in building the curriculum and teaching the classes.  Mentor Professors from four of the disciplines of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Dance) help design a curriculum with the overall purpose of encouraging and strengthening a lifelong love and understanding of the arts.  Select Mason students from each discipline act as instructors/assistants for the program, often fulfilling part of their Education Methods curriculum requirements through their participation.

We currently serve 50 students each year in this program.  These children are given opportunities to explore the arts in extraordinary ways. Through continued evaluation and assessment, we look forward to improving and expanding this successful outreach model to more neighborhoods!
