Part of Summer Music Intensive Week!


Come connect with other dedicated teen trombonists for a thrilling week of all things trombone! The Trombone Academy will be filled with engaging masterclasses, clinics, an audition workshop, chamber music and more. Trombone artist/ educator Sean Reusch and Mason School of Music Professor Matt Neff will lead students through lessons, coachings,
and ensembles. Of course, the Academy would not be complete without a mass trombone choir! Improve your musicianship, your playing, and make some trombone friends!

Whether you live near or far, students can add the “Summer Residential Option” and experience a week of campus life, with special evening activities included, while gaining new friendships with other like-minded artistic students. Students are fully supervised all week, with both male and female RA’s in housing. Rooms are double occupancy (linens and wi-fi included), and 3 meals a day are provided (dinner is included on Sunday, and breakfast and lunch are included on Friday). Check in is Sunday, June 17th, and students will check out Friday morning and be ready to depart immediately after the conclusion of the program on Friday afternoon.  After registering for Summer Trombone Academy (but before final checkout/ payment!), search for and add “Summer Residential Option” to your cart – or REGISTER HERE . IMPORTANT: No refunds can be given for the Summer Residential option after April 1, 2018.


An “After Care” option is also available for this program from 4-6 pm for $90/week, located in Mason’s Performing Arts Building and staffed by the Academy’s Summer Staff. Matthew Neff, B.M., Pennsylvania State University; M.M., Catholic University of America. Prof. Neff serves as Adjunct Professor of Trombone. He studied with Mark Lusk and Matt Guilford. Prof. Neff is highly active as a performer, educator, and composer. He is currently Bass Trombonist with the United States Navy Band in Washington, DC, a position he has held since 1992.

A versatile musician, he has performed with the National Symphony and National Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the Kennedy Center Ballet Orchestra. Other significant experiences include performances with several ‘off-broadway’ shows, various big-bands (Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd, Alan Baylock Orchestra, and the New Columbia Swing Orchestra), and studio recording. An active clinician, Prof. Neff has conducted master classes at High Schools, Colleges, and Universities across the country. He has been recognized for his compositions and arrangements, many of which have been published.

Third generation trombonist, Sean Reusch, has enjoyed a varied career, both as a performer and an educator and enjoys performing many types of music including solo, chamber, orchestral, studio, commercial, musical theater, and jazz. Originally from Toms River, NJ, Sean was a founding member of the internationally touring brass quintet, Presidio Brass, of which he was a member for seven years. He has performed with many groups including the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Redlands Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, Boston Brass and the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Sean has performed with artists such as Placido Domingo, Dave Brubeck, Johnny Mathis, David Sanborn, Bernadette Peters, Eddie Daniels, Michael Crawford, Johnny Mathis, Natalie Cole, Peter Cetera, Art Garfunkel, Barry White and Marvin Hamlisch. Sean has been heard in the pits of Book of Mormon, Kiss Me Kate, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Motown, Cinderella, Pippin, Kinky Boots, Newsies, Beautiful the Musical, Sound of Music, Matilda, and the Lion King. He is currently a member of the Nittany Trombone Quartet and the Millennia Consort.

As an educator, Sean has been on faculty at University of California San Diego, San Diego State University, Point Loma Nazarene University, and Palomar College, and the Idyllwild Arts Academy. Sean has presented master classes at Louisiana State University, Penn State University, Point Loma Nazarene University, St. Norbert College, San Diego State University, University of California Los Angeles, University of California Santa Barbara, University of Delaware, and University of Southern Mississippi. He maintains a large private studio and many of his students have gone on to study music at college. Sean’s former students currently hold positions as middle school and high school band directors, are college trombone professors, private trombone instructors, composers, and music copyists, and perform in symphony orchestras, jazz groups, military bands and rock bands in the United States. Sean is a Yamaha Artist.
