Explorations in Singing: Musical Theater

This 8-week class will introduce students to fun musical theater and contemporary repertoire while introducing fundamental techniques. Students will explore proper breathing, vocal control, music reading, and singing while dancing. Valuable performance and audition tips will also be introduced. The class will culminate with a final in-class performance of songs learned in the course.

Students are welcome to repeat the class. New repertoire will be introduced each session!

Ages: 13-18

Kathleen West is Acting for Young People’s (AFYP) Director of After School Programming, and has been a teaching artist with AFYP since 2017.  She is also the Vocal Director of our Saturday Showcase and Advanced Actors Showcase programs, and teaches Musical Theatre for our Summer Acting Camps. Kathleen also teaches voices with Mason Community Arts Academy and is a voice and acting coach for AFYP.

Throughout her teaching career, Kathleen has had the opportunity to direct her students in many plays, musicals, and musical theatre showcases. When she is not teaching, Kathleen proudly works as a professional actor in the DC area. Her recent acting credits include Escape to Margaritaville at Toby’s Dinner Theater, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Art of Murder, and Xanadu at Workhouse Performing Arts Center.

As a teaching artist, Kathleen offers an excellent understanding of performance from the actor’s perspective and has coached Elementary- through College-aged performers. Kathleen brings her own experience from her extensive musical theater background and her years of teaching to help students understand and improve their vocal technique, with an emphasis on acting through song.

Kathleen graduated Summa Cum Laude from George Mason University, receiving a BFA in Theatre with a concentration in Musical Theatre, and awards of excellence in both academics and performance.

  • All students will receive a Welcome Letter via email at least 1 week before the class starts with all necessary details.
