We’re Getting a New Name!

WRITTEN BY LIBBY CURTIS

Just as Shakespeare’s Juliet asked over 400 years ago, “What’s in a name?”, we here at Potomac Arts Academy have been contemplating that same question over the past several years. What’s in our name, and does it truly represent us? Through the last ten years, we have grown and matured into a vital division for George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, serving the community at large. We now feel the time is right for us to make this bold and important step of a name change.

Potomac Arts Academy, founded in 2008, originated from an initiative in the School of Music called Potomac Music Academy. We immediately began to expand the mission and scope to include community arts programs in the many arts disciplines offered in the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

As we grew in numbers and community impact, there were continued questions surrounding our name: “Are you really part of George Mason University?”, “Are you located in Potomac, Maryland?” just to name a few. After much thought, research, and discussion, we have decided to clarify and better identify ourselves with the University that we are so proud to serve.

I am happy to announce that on January 4, 2018, our name will officially change to Mason Community Arts Academy.

So, is it true “A rose by any other name will smell as sweet”? Well, we think so! Please rest assured that we plan on continuing to bring outstanding and enriching arts programs to the community and be better -and sweeter- than ever!

Free Piano Available to Good Home

A generous community member from the Prince William County area (south of Woodbridge) recently called the Academy about donating her two acoustic upright pianos to good homes. If anyone is interested in accepting this donation, please contact us asap.

Donated piano

The pianos (pictured above) are basic acoustic uprights. The piano itself would be free of charge (to a good home); however, the recipient is required to pay for the moving expense using a professional piano moving company, which averages $300-$500 depending on the distance travelled, number of stairs involved, etc.

If you think you have a need (and a space) for one of these pianos, it’s a great opportunity to look into. As per usual, we will handle this on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please email us at [email protected]  (no phone calls please).

Email Issues With Verizon, Yahoo and AOL

It has come to our attention that we have recently been experiencing intermittent email delivery issues with verizon.net, yahoo.com and aol.com email account holders. For our program participants/ parents, if you would like to provide an alternative email account to ensure program communication delivery, please let us know!

The cause of the issue is not known at this time, but we believe it is a larger problem beyond the Academy. We welcome any insights (we know we have a lot of IT-minded constituents!), and we will let everyone know if/ when the issue is resolved.

To provide a new and/or alternative email address, either call the Academy office at 703-993-9889 or send an email to [email protected] . Isn’t technology grand?
