Show off your artistic side with our new “Play Your Part” video series! Play your instrument, sing a song, act out a scene, draw a picture – do whatever creative activity you do (or have done) at Mason’s Potomac Arts Academy – for the camera. Short videos highlighting our students and faculty will be posted on our social media channels throughout the year under the special hashtag #paaplayyourpart.
Congratulations to our honorary inaugural participant Hannah (more to come)!
This is community arts at its best. We invite any past and current students/ participants to join in! Here’s how it works:
- Record a short (approx 30 seconds) vid of yourself, starting with saying something like “Hi, my name is [first name only], and I take [ex: piano, acting, art] classes at Potomac Arts Academy”. Then play/ demonstrate your art. The tone is casual and fun, so your phone cam is just fine.
- Email the original video file (NOT a URL link) to [email protected] (or share via Dropbox, Google Drive, etc), title the email “Play Your Part Video” and in the email include the person’s name (only first name will be used). Please be aware that by submitting the video, you are giving permission to post the video to our social media channels – YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.
- Once we have reviewed the video content, we will let you know when we have posted it.
Let’s show the world how important and enjoyable – and inspiring – the arts can be. Submissions will be accepted September 2016 through August 2017. Do your art and play your part!

Camp season is upon us, and for many families that means juggling kids, schedules, transportation and, well, let’s face it – sanity! Here’s a few tips to help you navigate camp central at Mason.
Tip #1 – Thoroughly read through your Welcome Letter that Potomac sends to your email. We usually send it out 1 week (Monday) before the start date, and a reminder email the Friday before, so if you don’t receive it be sure to call the Potomac office to inquire. OK, it’s a little lengthy, but it’s chock full of important info like drop-off/ pick-up procedures, program/ concert schedules, lunch options, etc. It’s the best way to prepare yourself for the program logistics.
Tip #2 – Get familiar with campus beforehand, if possible. Currently most (but not all) of our summer camps happen on the Mason Fairfax Campus or the Potomac Arts Building in Fairfax. Get comfortable with campus and surroundings by reviewing the Summer Arts 2016 Fairfax Campus Map, watching the WELCOME TO MASON VIDEO SERIES (be sure to choose the appropriate video for your program), and perhaps doing a “dry run” of the drive before the program starts.
Tip #3 – Without exception, the First Day (usually Monday) is the most hectic. Things smooth out after that for the rest of the week. It’s a good (and hopefully calming) thing to keep in mind that first morning. However, if you have major questions/ concerns, don’t hesitate to communicate (nicely, please) to one of the “Redshirt” summer staff, and we will do everything we can to improve the situation.
Tip #4 – Communication is key. In some instances, your child might need to be absent one day of camp (for illness, emergency , etc) or perhaps you might need to do an “early” pick-up. Each Welcome Letter has an On-Site Contact for you to call that morning to let us know.
Tip #5 – Aftercare is available (for Mason Fairfax Campus only). If the Pick-up time window just doesn’t work for your schedule, you can place your child in our Aftercare program from 4-6pm for an additional $90 for the week. It costs a little more, but if it saves your emotional well-being, it might be worth it! (Call the office to inquire.)
While the beginning of the program week can be a little intense, we are confident that by the end of the week (and the final concerts/ presentations/ showcases) both you and (most importantly) your child will be completely satisfied (and perhaps overjoyed) with the experience.
Memorial Day is an official holiday for George Mason University, with all administrative offices and classrooms closed. Therefore, the Academy will be closed for all activities, and NO lessons or classes have been scheduled for that day. Enjoy your holiday!
