James Myers

Biography

Voice Teaching Artist

James Myers is an accomplished professional baritone, actor and voice teacher. He specializes in singing repertoire from opera, oratorio, art song, musical theatre, church music and classical crossover. He has taught private voice lessons for many years and helped singers gain admittance to top universities, conservatoires, graduate programs apprentice programs and professional shows.  He has also helped high school students with preparation for school musicals, choral ensembles and local theatre productions in the community. Prior to joining the Mason Community Arts Academy, Mr. Myers served as an adjunct voice instructor in the school of music at George Mason University.

Mr. Myers holds a Master of Music degree in vocal performance and has sung with many professional theaters and opera companies including: Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap Opera Company, Bel Cantanti Opera, Commonwealth Concert Opera, the Washington Savoyards, Creative Cauldron and the Mittelsachsiches Theater in Freiberg, Germany.

As an opera singer, James recently sang the role of Count di Luna in Verdi’s Il Trovatore with Commonwealth Concert Opera in Richmond, Virginia.  He made his debut with Commonwealth Concert Opera in May of 2022 when he sang the role of Guglielmo in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte.  He is a frequent soloist with Bel Cantanti Opera.  Additional operatic performances include the role of Damis in the opera Tartuffe by Kirke Mechem as well as Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors.  Opera roles in his repertoire or currently being prepared include:  Germont in La Traviata, Iago in Otello, Valentin in Faust, Fritz/Pierrot in Die tote Stadt by Korngold, Don Giovanni and many others.  As a singer of oratorio, he has served as Bass soloist for Handel’s Messiah, Baritone soloist in the Faure Requiem and Bass soloist in Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ.  Other oratorio roles in his repertoire include:  The Brahms Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Carmina Burana.

As an actor, James originated the role of Baltus Van Tassle in the world premiere of the Helen Hayes award nominated musical, Ichabod, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow with the theatre group, Creative Cauldron. He has also performed with the Signature Theater Overtures Program, The Little Theater of Alexandria, Rockville Musical Theater, City of Fairfax Theatre Company, McLean Players and Theater of the First Amendment. His favorite roles include: The Beast in Beauty and the Beast, Tommy Albright in Brigadoon, South Carolina Senator, Edward Rutledge in 1776, John Jasper in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Warren Ives in Ira Levin’s play, Cantorial, and Max Halliday in Dial M for Murder.

James is a full member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (N.A.T.S.) and is a full member of the American Guild of Musical Artists (A.G.M.A.), the performing union for opera singers which has reciprocity with Actors Equity Association (AEA).

Mr. Myers has experience with helping students eliminate tension in the voice and coaching repertoire as singers prepare for auditions, competitions and performances. When he is not performing or teaching, James enjoys exercising, trying new restaurants, and exploring any place with mountains.
