Matthew Libby

Biography

Trombone Instructor

Matthew Libby is originally from Lewes, Delaware. He has performed with the George Mason University Jazz Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Trombone Ensemble, and the Mason Four Trombone Quartet. Mr. Libby has also performed with the University of Delaware Jazz Ensembles 1 and 2, Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Concert Choir, Chorale, Pep Band, UD Slides, Trombone Choir, and the Harrington Theatre Arts Company Pit Orchestra. Additionally, he is currently a Graduate Fellow for the Green Machine Pep Band at George Mason University.

Mr. Libby has been involved in a myriad of professional opportunities. He is a member of the band, Hott Toddy’s, where he performs rock, pop, and dance music in public venues. He also was selected to perform with a brass quintet at Carowinds Amusement Park for their holiday season. Additional performances include Hairspray (tenor trombone) for Brandywine High School, A Chorus Line (bass trombone), and many other experiences performing in churches both on bass trombone and as a tenor vocalist.

Mr. Libby was awarded the 2021 Junior Award in Brass from the University of Delaware School of Music. He also participated in the University of Delaware Summer Scholars Program where he completed a research project revolving around the history of the bass trombone. This project also included interviews that he conducted with world renowned bass trombonists such as Doug Yeo, George Curran, Blair Bollinger, James Markey, Bill Reichenbach, and many others. He has been on the University of Delaware Dean’s list seven times and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). He was also a University of Delaware Music Theory Teaching Assistant and a University of Delaware Student Ambassador.

Mr. Libby is currently a graduate student at George Mason University where he studies Bass Trombone Performance. He also works in George Mason University’s Center for the Arts as a Hospitality Assistant for guest artists.
