Biography

Cello Teaching Artist

Cellist Youbin Jun’s performances, teaching, and community engagement reflect her desire to share the beauty of music. Ms. Jun has a diverse career as a soloist, orchestra player, chamber musician, and educator.  With knowledge of a wide range of repertoire from classical to contemporary music, she has appeared at major venues including Jordan Hall, Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Holley Hall, Seoul Art Center, and Sejong Arts Center. She was selected as a soloist and gave her debut concert with Suwon Philharmonic orchestra.

Working closely with her mentor, Paul Katz (cellist of the Cleveland string quartet), who has been the basis of her teaching philosophy, Ms. Jun encourages students to realize that the musical journey to find their own musical “voices” is life-worthy as her own mentor has done for her. She hosts Cello Workshop every year in Korea with her private students. Dedicated to community engagement through teaching, Ms. Jun currently serves on faculty at the Mason Community Arts Academy at George Mason University. Previously, she was the teaching assistant at the Mason Gross School of Arts assisting music theory classes and she served as a sectional coach of the undergraduate orchestra at Rutgers University. She holds a private studio enjoying a teaching experience of now seven years. Her students have been successful in regional competitions and orchestral auditions. Ms. Jun has joined the Maryland Symphony Orchestra for the 2019/2020 season. Additionally, she holds positions with Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and Washington Chamber Orchestra. She is a solo cellist of Friday Morning Music Club and maintains a busy schedule of solo and chamber music concerts.

A passionate chamber musician, Ms. Jun has appeared as a fellowship recipient at several music festivals during the summers, including the Sarasota Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and has completed master classes with Steve Doane, Ronald Leonard, and Timothy Eddy.

Ms. Jun is also a recipient of awards and honors of several other competitions, including first prize at American Protégé Concerto Competition, New York International Music Concour, Grand Prize Virtuoso International Competition, and numerous accolades from Korea Chamber Orchestra Competition, Strad Competition, and the Classical Music Magazine Competition.

Ms. Jun received her bachelor’s and master’s degree from New England Conservatory of Music. As an orchestral player, Ms. Jun has appeared in Boston Civic Orchestra and Boston Philharmonic orchestra and was appointed as a principal in Rutgers Symphony Orchestra. She has completed her doctoral course works at Rutgers University with a full scholarship.
