Mason Community Arts Academy

Summer Devised Theater Ensemble

Overview

Your Story on Stage: Art, Writing & Acting Camp, A Devised Theater Intensive

Create art. Tell your story. Perform what matters to you.

What if your student didn’t just perform in a show—but helped create it from the ground up?

Over two weeks, in this one-of-a-kind camp, students will grow as artists, writers, performers, and collaborators as they contribute to the creation of an original ensemble play inspired by their own ideas, experiences, and passions.

Rooted in devised theater, this process begins with a group of artists and an idea, rather than a script. Students generate material through art, writing, and performance, guided by professional theater artists from The Precipice Theatre Team, who shape their contributions into a cohesive, polished, wholly unique piece of theater.

Unlike traditional theater camps, this program invites students to explore multiple art forms while discovering their voice and working as an ensemble.

What Makes This Camp Different?

Students collaborate with professional theater artists to create and perform an original play about their world. Every student’s voice and ideas help shape the final performance, while teaching artists guide the work into a cohesive and fully realized piece.

Students develop their play through multi-disciplinary pursuits, including visual art, creative writing, and performance.  Artwork is showcased in a gallery-style exhibit at the performance, and the writing developed throughout the camp becomes the script for the play.

The program emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and self-expression, while giving students the opportunity to explore topics they care about in a supportive environment.

Each Day, Students Will Take Part In:

  • Visual Art Studio: Students create artwork inspired by a shared theme. This work deepens their exploration of the ideas in the play and is featured in a live exhibit for the audience.
  • Creative Writing Lab: Students generate stories and ideas through personal and collaborative writing. Their work becomes the foundation of the play.
  • Acting & Performance: Students build acting technique, stage presence, movement, and ensemble skills, growing as confident performers.
  • Creative Experiences: Outdoor games, ensemble-building activities, and occasional guest artists (such as movement or mime) bring energy and variety to the day.
  • Rehearsal:Students work with professional theater artists each afternoon to apply their acting skills and writing as they collaboratively shape and rehearse the final performance.

Final Showcase Experience

At the end of the session, families are invited to a culminating event featuring:

  • A curated exhibit of student visual artwork exploring the camp’s theme
  • The premiere performance of a student-created original play

Perfect For Students Who:

  • Love art, storytelling, or performing
  • Want to try more than just acting
  • Enjoy working creatively with others
  • Have ideas, stories, or perspectives they want to share
  • Are curious, imaginative, and open to trying something new

Ideal for actors, movers, creative artists, and writers in middle and high school, this program will culminate in a premiere performance on the evening of Friday, August 7.
