JumpstART Advanced 2-D Art Summer Studio

SUMMER 2019 INFORMATION WILL BE UPDATED BY JANUARY 15, 2019!

This one-week summer intensive is designed to guide students towards college preparation, but is open to all creative teens regardless of college intentions. The 2-D course projects will focus on printmaking and mixed-media, culminating with a set of completed works that can be included in a personal artist portfolio. Possessing extensive high school education experience, Mason’s Director of Art Education Justin Sutters will instruct the course, which takes place in Mason’s School of Art studio classrooms.

An “After Care” option is available for this program from 4-6 pm for $90/week, located in Mason’s Performing Arts Building and staffed by the Academy’s Summer Staff. After registering for this program (but before final checkout/ payment!), search for and add “After Care” to your cart (be sure to choose the correct week).

Read about Mr. Sutters

Dr. Sutters was a K-12 art educator in an urban school district for seven years and also taught for two years in São Paulo, Brazil. He completed his undergraduate and masters degree from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, attained his doctorate degree from the Ohio State University receiving national recognition for his dissertation. Since, he has been an Assistant Professor and currently is the Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program in Art Education at George Mason University. He has presented his research at the state, national and international level and is published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. He currently is the Chair of the Professional Learning through Research (PLR) working group of the National Art Education Association’s Research Commission, the NAEA Higher Education Representative for the Southeastern Division, on the review board of Art Education and Visual Arts Research (VAR) and has been a contributing member of the Data Visualization Working Group. His research focuses on pre-service practices, teacher licensure, national demography data, comparative studies/Brazilian studies, and theories pertaining to space and place. His studio practice and background is primarily in the 2-D realm including printmaking, drawing and watercolor.
