Overview
The Summer Arts at Mason Internship positions are designed for collegiate music, art, and theater students with exceptional interpersonal skills and a passion for community arts education.
Mason Community Arts Academy (MCAA) is seeking positive, proactive, organized candidates looking to gain valuable arts management and administration experience. Working alongside the Summer Arts at Mason Admin Team, interns participate and support the daily operations of MCAA’s weekly Summer Arts at Mason camp programs for students ages four to adults.
This internship allows students to gain an understanding of program management in a fast-paced, hands-on learning environment, including opportunities to assist students and instructional faculty in the classroom. Applicants are welcome to apply to be considered for multiple positions.
Who We Are
Mason Community Arts Academy is the community arts education division of George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts in Fairfax, Virginia. The Academy brings enriching arts instruction to the community through inspiring and innovative lessons, classes and summer programs in music, theater, visual arts, and film and video, which are open to all ages and levels. It also offers programs focused on teacher education and enrichment. Additionally, extensive outreach programs in music and theater have been established to reach under-resourced populations both in our area and abroad.
2026 Summer Open Positions
Music, Art, and Theater Administrative Internships
Interns will:
- Assist the Summer Arts at Mason Admin Team with the preparation of camp materials
- Assist with general space maintenance and management of camp activities and logistics
- Assist with student supervision and engagement
- Support instructional teams in the classroom
- Interface with parents, faculty, and staff
- Help to promote a positive, safe camp experience
While the majority of the internship will be focused on administration and camp operations, interns will also be asked to provide in-classroom support for our programs, as needed.
A set schedule will be assigned and hours may vary to meet specific program needs. Prior experience in music or art such as a degree program, extracurriculars, or other similar professional or educational setting required. Previous camp counselor, camp staff, or youth education experience preferred.
A limited number of positions are available.
I. Music Administrative Interns
Music Administrative Interns are required to commit to the full six-week internship period:
- Projected Schedule:
- Week 1 (Camp Prep): Tuesday, June 16 to Thursday, June 18, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Week 2: (Band Camp): Monday, June 22 to Friday, June 26, 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 27, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Week 3: Off, Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 3
- Week 4–7: (Various), Monday, July 6 to Friday, July 31, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Programming takes place at the deLaski Performing Arts Building and surrounding locations on George Mason’s Fairfax campus. Please note that this position requires physical activity such as frequent walking, standing, and lifting up to 35 pounds. Additional training and orientation date prior to internship start TBA.
Compensation for this position is $3,000.
II. Art Administrative Interns
Art Administrative Interns are required to commit to the full six-week internship period:
- Projected Schedule:
- Weeks 1– 6: Monday, June 29 to Friday, August 7
- Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Programming takes place at the Art and Design Building and surrounding locations on George Mason’s Fairfax campus. Please note that this position requires physical activity such as frequent walking, standing, and lifting up to 35 pounds. Additional training and orientation date prior to internship start TBA.
Compensation for this position is $2,500.
III. Theater Administrative Interns
Theater Administrative Interns are required to commit to the full seven-week internship period:
- Projected Schedule:
- Weeks 1–7: Monday, June 22 to Friday, August 7
- Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Programming takes place at the deLaski Performing Arts Building and surrounding locations on George Mason’s Fairfax campus. Please note that this position requires physical activity such as frequent walking, standing, and lifting up to 35 pounds. Additional training and orientation date prior to internship start TBA.
Compensation for this position is $3,000.
Mason Summer Band Camp Internship
The Mason Summer Band Camp Internship is open to current collegiate music students with wind band experience. Interns will work closely with onsite instructional faculty and administrative staff to assist in the classroom, encourage and mentor students, and assist with student supervision and classroom management.
Internship duties will include:
- Assisting with band ensemble rehearsals, playing your primary instrument (if needed), and mentoring students in your section
- Chaperoning student groups and leading them to various activities around campus
- Assisting with ensemble set up, activity set up, camp performances, and other camp logistics
- Supporting instructional faculty with sectionals
- Supporting administrative staff with student check-in and check-out and various other administrative tasks
- Fostering a positive and inclusive camp environment
Band Camp Interns are required to commit to the full internship period of one week (including training and orientation):
- Projected Schedule:
- Monday, June 22 to Friday, June 26, 2025 from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m
- Saturday, June 27, 2026 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Location:

Compensation for this position is $780.
Mason String Intensive Internship
The Mason String Intensive Internship is open to current collegiate music students with string instrument experience (violin, viola, cello). Interns will work closely with onsite instructional faculty and administrative staff to assist in the classroom, encourage and mentor students, and assist with student supervision and classroom management.
Internship duties will include:
- Assisting with string orchestra rehearsals, playing your primary instrument (if needed), and mentoring students in your section
- Chaperoning student groups and leading them to various activities around campus
- Assisting with ensemble set up, activity set up, camp performances, and other camp logistics
- Supporting instructional faculty with sectionals
- Supporting administrative staff with student check-in and check-out and various other administrative tasks
- Fostering a positive and inclusive camp environment
String Camp Interns are required to commit to the full internship period of one week (including training and orientation):

- Monday, July 20 to Friday, July 24, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Summer Arts at Mason Photography Marketing Internship
The Photography Marketing Intern will assist with all photo and video creative needs of Mason Community Arts Academy’s Summer Arts at Mason program. This position will be responsible for capturing and delivering photos and videos to support the Academy’s print and digital marketing materials. The intern’s work will play a crucial role in showcasing our programs to prospective families and students in highlighting the unique and valuable experiences we offer.
In a typical week, the intern will be assigned several programs to acquire footage, moving in between classrooms and buildings on campus to capture students learning, performing, and creating. This position requires an eye for composition and creativity; the intern will need to be flexible and readily available to capture key moments in and out of the classroom. Experience with content creation, working with youths, or having an arts background is a plus. This position will directly report to the Marketing and Communications Coordinator.
Internship duties will include:
- Capturing high-quality, engaging photos/videos to support the creative process of marketing content for all Academy summer programs
- Think creatively and assist with developing a robust photo and video library for printed and digital content
- Edit and upload photos daily to shared folder for quick processing and disseminating
Applicant Requirements:
- Displays excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proficient in photography techniques, including lighting, editing, etc.
- Ability to provide photography and photo editing for social media and/or website (Photoshop experience preferred)
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Portfolio required as part of application materials
- Must supply own photo equipment (DSLR/mirrorless camera preferred)
- Experience in content creation for social media a plus
The Photography Marketing intern is required to commit to the full internship period of seven weeks (including training and orientation):
- Projected Schedule:
- Wednesdays to Fridays beginning June 24 to August 3, 2026.
- Hours are 1–4 p.m., with exception of Wednesday, June 24 to Friday, June 26 from 6–9 p.m. (dinner provided).

Compensation for this position is $1200.
