Orff Schulwerk Continues To Inspire After 35 Years At Mason

The Orff Schulwerk Certification program at Mason has elevated the approach to music education for countless elementary and middle school music teachers around the region, the country, and globally for over 35 years. Start with Orff Level I this summer, July 15-26, 2019, or continue with Levels II or III to pursue your official American Orff Schulwerk Association (AOSA) Certification.

Directed by George Mason University Professor Joyce Stephansky, the program takes place in Mason’s School of Music on the Mason Fairfax campus in Fairfax, VA (part of the Washington, DC Metro area). Through an arrangement with the School of Music and the Mason Community Arts Academy, participants can enroll as Non-Credit (still Certification eligible) or For-Credit (earning Graduate credit through Mason).

“Teachers can expect a transformative experience, and a sense of belonging to a unique and creative community,” explained Professor Stephansky. “I would tell any potential student that Orff Schulwerk teacher education will change your life! As always, we will be offering all three Orff Levels, led by an energetic and knowledgeable seasoned faculty. This year our program will be honored by the presentation of a specialty xylophone, created by Sonor instruments, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the American Orff Schulwerk Association. This honor also comes with a scholarship for one of our students.”

“My favorite part of teaching Level I is watching the students begin to understand that it is the process of the teaching and not the product that is our main goal as educators. It’s like watching light bulbs going off all over the place!” exclaimed Ms. Stephansky. “Celebrating our 30th anniversary a few years ago was a highlight. I also remember the awe and inspiration I felt as a Level I participant in the GMU Orff program way back in 1993.”

The final Friday of the program will be celebrated with a luncheon and a special sharing of the highlights from each Level class. Family, friends, and former students are invited to attend. “We are also planning a fun after-hours gathering with Kodály friends to share our bond through music education,” said Ms. Stephanky.
